At no time in the past has a Canadian Prime Minister or Premier "fell on their own sword" in response to scandalous activities in their government. And any Cabinet ministers that resign still collect their pay as a federal or provincial politician, while their staff and government officials involved in the scandalous activities either continue in their jobs, or maybe lose their jobs (but with a large severance payment, and keeping all the money they unjustifiably made while involved in the scandalous activities).

Did you know that the maximum fine that the federal Ethics Commissioner can impose on a Cabinet minister, Cabinet staff person, or senior government official who violates the federal ethics law? Only $500 -- and the Commissioner can only impose that fine for violations of only some of the ethics rules, not all of them!

Clearly, government accountability systems are the real scandal, and until loopholes are closed, enforcement strengthened, and penalties increased, scandalous behaviour in all Canadian governments will continue at a very high rate.

So organizations, please join Democracy Watch's good government coalitions, and organizations and individuals please send letters to politicians, calling on them to make the changes needed to require everyone involved in Canadian politics to act honestly, ethically, openly, representatively and to prevent waste.
