I think that Gillian Steward grossly underestimates the intelligence and awareness of Canadians They understand the calamitous consequences of the tar sands and the contribution it will make to greenhouse emissions for a long period of time. To suggest in any way that people will be grateful for the tar sand's creation of jobs and contribution to government revenues assumes that people would ignore the environmental impact of the tar sands and that economic growth and and a green economy are mutually exclusive. Alternate forms of energy are labor intensive and have the potential to fuel the economy as well as automobiles, industry and our homes.

She is also ignoring the imminent and disastrous impact of global warming and that the suffering caused by even a two degree rise in temperature would quickly offset any potential benefits of extracting oil from the tar sands. Journalists ought to spend more time explaining not only the environmental costs but the economic costs of climate change instead of concentrating on perceived benefits even if they are illusionary. They should also focus on solutions to the problem of global warming and that fossil fuels should remain where they belong, in the ground.
