The cable companies are doing what all business try to do - make a profit for their owners and shareholders. They are getting away with violating their mandate because of the CRTC. Our federal communications regulator should be held liable for this mis-use of public funds and the Canadian government needs to investigate the CRTC and make changes where needed. Shutting them down completely or at least replacing the people who appear to rule in favour of big cable and telecos.

Simple math ($100 million divided by 139 local stations) shows that our local cable channel in Red Deer Alberta (Shaw) gets approximately $720,000 for programming. I can't imagine that what they show here - pre-recorded corporate segments from Red Deer and Edmonton and Calgary and what looks like an infomercial - can cost them that much. There are people in our community who could make this huge amount of money go a lot further.

The community media fund and the local programming improvement fund are scams and ripoffs. Telus charged us $1.78 LPIF fee on our last satellite bill. I'd give my share to a local group in a minute to support community programming via the web - the heck with old fashioned TV.
