To be fair the situation in the US is a hard slog for anyone on the left. Combine this with the fact that the right wing which supported him financially will have their media trash hime if he were to move away from what they will allow. But at least he would have kept his self respect if he ever really had any.
That being said, a leader on the left could have mobilised support by always speaking forcefully for things ordinary people want like publicly funded healh care and good jobs. He should have brought out policies that would be popular with the general public and forced congress and the senate to either support them with their votes or publicly say they were against those good things. He let them off too easy. He could have had programs that were very popular with working people and just stuck to them. Instead he came out with stuff that wasn't worth supporting. His failure was in not forcing the issue.
The way it is we don't know if he was our man or their man. The Democrats deserve whatever trashing they get as they are no improvement over the Republicans.
One lesson the left needs to learn is tha the right will never let up on anything they want and the only way for the left is to never let up on their policies.
State your case and force the issue.
