Already posted on Gun registry politics suit Harper well: (Oldest first)
I enjoyed your ed this week, but your friend Ed (while not a Neanderthal) is, I suspect, "willfully misinformed"...
When you write: *Then there was the bureaucracy, paperwork and the sense of being subject to investigation. "I went to the Post Office expecting a couple of forms. I got a small book of things to fill out," my neighbour Ed told me. "They made it as difficult as possible." All this came on top of the licensing program, which is also costly and time-consuming...* none of this is true.
I know: I am a gun owner and I registered my gun... it was easy - there was one form. Honestly. And what they forget to tell you is that EVERYBODY who paid originally, got a full refund!
According to Ed: *He would like to see a ban on semi-automatic rifles and rifles that can convert to semi-automatic, special police units dedicated to stopping the import of handguns...* These things already exist - it's public knowledge: they are deliberately thrown up as a smokescreen to make the gun lobby seem "reasonable".
The thing to remember is that much of the gun lobby is financed by interests from the States, and is extremely well organized, especially when it comes to maintaining talking points and hot-button issues.
Many gun owners, I know from personal experience, are not above "bending the truth": they deliberately caused much of the chaos and cost overruns during the startup of the gun registry by strategically submitting huge amounts of false and/or incomplete information.
Finally, I've noticed a lack of balance in many reports on this, with several reporters going to gun-shop owners and individual police officers for "reaction". Many beat cops I've met are gun-club members, and so are quite a few journalists...
You've been had.
