Here! Here! for the 11 changes we'd like to see in 2011.

To that I would add another: We must begin to seriously renovate the current electoral and parliamentary systems in order to firmly and conscientiously reflect and represent the needs and priorities of all Canadian citizens.

Our recent governance has been so partisan and power driven as to be totally ineffective in addressing urgent needs for equitable and universal health care, day care, employment training, and basic human rights like affordable housing, clean water, and living wages for all. Corporate Lobbyists are determining government priorities and policies and elected representatives are muzzled or prorogued into being unable to fulfil their obligations to their constituents.

This must become a national priority!!!

Ish writes: "As normal citizens, we can't do these kinds of things ourselves. But we can press our leaders for action and hold their feet to the fire when they would have us believe things can simply proceed as ever. "

Ish, please explain just how normal citizens are supposed to "hold their feet to the fire"? For example, can you think of any recent examples to show that Harper is listening to and being influenced by public opinion on say, climate change, Alberta Tar Sands, Senate blocking of Bill C-311, proroguing Parliament, ignoring Israeli brutality against Gazans, harmonizing policies with the U.S., and on and on?

As Murray Dobbin so quaintly put it (paraphrasing): "People in power don't give a shit what we think. That's what it means to have power." And until citizens figure out how to gain more power -- i.e. by organizing, which isn't easy -- not much is going to change.
