My good friend Mel is absolutely correct. I write as a member of the CCF/NDP since the mid-thirties and in particular one who was engaged in the CCF/NDP administration in Saskatchewan from 1946-1964 and was part of the small group which initially drafted what became the Medicare Act. I also acted as adviser to NDP governments in Manitoba and British Columbia. In all of these significant socialist advances were achieved and many retained by successive governments. Many became part of national policies and part of the progressive Canadian socio-political fabric.

The latest significant steps to national power owe much to the long history of the party and its work throughout Canada and in particular to its persistent denial of even social democracy embedded somehow in the Liberal Party - most recently witness the record of Paul Martin when in office in the nineties. Liberals who wish to engage in a more enlightened left dialogue are more than welcome to join the NDP. Those who do not, may stay where they are or find their comfort blanket in the Tory oligarchical/capitalist setting.
