Reading what David Suzuki writes allways gets me thinking...
We might wonder what goes on in the minds of science deniers. What is so odd is that the political leaders and corporate CEOs who "refute the facts" are generally very smart people!! Like you say, it is baffling to understand what drives their thinking.
I know one of the corporate types personally, and I cannot figure out if they are aware of the facts and just lying to advance the corporate agenda, or if it runs deeper. One thing could be that because they have amassed great fortunes by working in polluting and destructive industries, perhaps they cannot face the idea that their wealth is "ill gotten gains".
Or, that the future is longer than the "3 year return on investment" they base every decision on, and therefore the clash with reality that is setting in as the climate changes is just too much for them to cope with.
The image we build by the time we are 50 years old has to be deconstructed and rebuilt to meet the new reality of approaching old age and, ultimately, death. Highly successfull people might be having a more difficult time of that than regular people. Therefore, they live, for a time at least, in a kind of twilight zone.
None of the great civilisations "saw it coming" when they crashed. Were their leaders similarly flawed?
I don't know the answer to my question, but if we don't figure it out these leaders will lead us into their twilight zone and that spells real trouble as it clashes with reality.
